Okay bear with me.. Why on shows about space like TNG when there's an obsticle in there way.. why can they not just go above it or under it? It's space after all. I feel stupid asking this but I have wondered since I watched my 1st Star Trek episode and this came up.I assume there is a reason uless it was just in the story;ine.

"TNG" = "Star Trek, The Next Generation," right?

Just remember you're dealing with screenwriters who are interested in making an interesting story line - and details which may be inconvenient to the story often go ignored. Perhaps the obstacle you are referring to is not stationary, but rather can move to block the Enterprise from moving forward?

If you want to find things to pick on in the show then consider: (1) faster-than-light travel, (2) radio messages that can instantaneously reach the Enterprise from Star Fleet Command, which may be hundreds or even thousands of light years away, and (3) the transporter.

Also mental concepts of adjusting steering. Esp at extreme speeds, a slight change of 1 or 2 degrees would put a object 1000's of miles off direction in seconds at "light speed"

Plus of course they would not get to blow something up.
