I am remodeling a home built in 1956. I had to remove the kitchen and bathroom floor (3/4 inch plywood over 2x4, sitting on slab) The remainder of the house has original plank wood flooring. I am wanting to raise the kitchen and bath floor 1/1/2 inches over slab and lay tile. What is the best way to raise floor that will not crack or shift.

U removed material that totaled 2 3/8 inches. Why replacing with only 1 1/2 inch?

Use 1x2 or 1x3 sleepers 16'' on center, one layer of 1/2'' plywood and one layer of 1/4'' plywood. This will give u 1 1/2''. Level and shim sleepers as needed and nail to concrete approximately one foot apart. Glue and screw both layers of plywood to sleepers.

Plywood is not recommended for bathroom floor because of water.

I am wanting to put in tile, so I have to leave 1/2 inch for thinset and tile, and I do not want to use wood because of what I just had to remove (rotten wood). I was considering sandwiching 6 pieces of Hardi Plank, I figure concrete 1 1/2 inch think is to thin... was told I could try Portland #2 cement, or grout. Just wanting to get some professional opinions. Thanks for the help.

When my kitchen was done, contractor used thin set to do the build up necessary to reach height required. It was about 1- 1/2''. It is a lot of work to keep it level. Worked for me.
