I have had a period for over 14 days as of today. Two days ago I went to see my primary doctor after hours. He did not seemed concerned sent me for iron blood test and pregnancy test. Well overnight it got heavier and I already had blood clots but more where coming down. I went this time to urgent care this doctor was WAY more concerning. She sent me for more labs to make sure I was OK in all areas. Then she did a pap smear and I felt pain during pelvic examination on one side more than the other. She suggested we get an ultra sounds. The ultra sound showed I have a 10x11 inch ovarian cyst on the right and a smaller on the left. The one of the left I believe said its around 3 inches or so. My blood work just show a bit of anemia, but I was feeling weaker and weaker and almost like you were about to get the flu feeling, light headed a bit warm etc.. They recommended I go to the ER so I can see a OBGYN asap. Since the OBGYN over the phone stated I may need surgery.

I go to the ER the check in nurse tells me stop eating or drinking surgery may be done. I got my room and I wanted on the OGBYN in the mean time I got an IV. The OBGYN comes in two hours later and she says well this is normal for you right? I state that it is not normal. Although I have PCOS my periods are very regular. She goes on to say " I really dont know why they sent you here, they did everything they could over there". She then goes on to state that she does not want to do surgery because they are to many risks like dying from the anesthesia and if she goes in there and scrapes around that I up my chances of infertility and she said "you have to just basically have to suck it up, sorry" Suck it up? Really? It's not like I want to come to the ER it was concering to other doctors hello!

So I ask her well if we don't do surgery can't it rupture? She said yeah! She said I did the right thing by coming in (yeah she contradicts herself) since people with PCOS can develop cancerous cysts/tumors. She then says well since you are in my hands now I am going to do a pelvic exam (pap smear) just to make sure there are not polyps in the entering of the vagina etc. Well she starts the pap smear and then she starts doing the normal thing I guess. She all the sudden tell me I am going to take a piece of the uterus wall to test it for cancer. Hmmm OK at that point I already have my legs open and a pap smear thing in me I don't have much time to process and she's already going in. It felt so horrible I screamed and started crying. I honestly sounded like I was giving birth. I did not like the fact that she didn't speak to me about what she may do during the pap smear. That was horrible!

She was rude to the RN since she didn't know a certain instrument and then she tells me this is not a clinic and this is not where we set you up for surgery... I was honestly lost at this point! Hello I am in a ER?

As to the cyst many tell me that I should get it out due to the size. I am now experiencing acute pain on the right side and my mother even suggest I go back to the ER just to make sure the OBGYN is not there. This OBGYN suggestion was to wait 8 week let nature take it's course and if it didn't decrease then to do surgery. The urgent care doctor started me on birth control pills to lower the amount of blood that was coming out. I keep getting blood clots and the period doesn't seem to have lowered.

*I had a cyst about the same size if not bigger back in 2005 about 7 years ago and I went in for surgery two days later. They even told me that there was a possibility that they may need to remove the ovary. Depending on how bad it had affected it. Luckily it was saved.

Measurements are usually in centimeters. Please tell us how big this cyst on the right really is.
You really should not be at the ER once the ER decides not to admit you to the ward for surgery. ERs are overworked, understaffed, super expensive, tend to still require 36 hour shifts (with naps between patients), and depending on how tired they are and what you have for insurance, you may get really lousy care.
So go back to your primary doctor, and not after hours!
Women do live with cysts, sometimes their whole lives. We can't advise about whether you need surgery.
