How to fix the popping noise
I live in Medina, Ohio and At times I hear a real loud cracking sound mostly on the outer wall and in the Dining room, just purchased the house last year, also the previous owners put down ceramic tiles in the Dining room and used a sand based grout, I have noiticed that the grout has been coming up, not sure if its coming up because of the popping, but was wondering if this could be the problem, from them glueing down these tiles and the floor cannot move, does anyone have any good suggestions to get the popping to stop

Popping means something is moving, likely the foundation but it could be the walls deflecting in the wind. Do you notice anything about when the noise happens, like only during a strong breeze or never when its raining?

Any plumbing in those walls? Is there a gas hot water heater nearby? Can you furnish more details? Back to you, Tom

Thanks for the reply
Its more noticeable on the colder days it seems like, There is no water lines in that area, the majority of the loud noises are coming from the area of the exterior wall right were the living room and the dinning room separate, it does seem to be any different if we have windy days, they do have a heavy stainless steel triple wall smoke stack that was from there wood burner, its not being used but it does run up the side of the house maybe 30' of 8'' stack, was even thinking if I should but some plywood up in the attic to give the joists more support,
Thanks
Bill

How is thee stack attached to the home? 30' would expand and contract quite a bit and mounting bolts can transfer the sound of movement

Its mounted by some multi use angle and some steel strap, probabally mounted at 4 different points, about 6 months ago I had to tighten the bolts back up, several were coming out of the house, I am going to take this down in the summer because it is not being used,
