    Giving birth under water
I would like to know if you want to give birth under water, are you able to do so if you want to have an epidural?

    Hi Jeanetta Lynn,

No, you would not be able to have an epidural while having a water birth. The use of an epidural would require monitoring of contractions, fetal heart rate, and blood pressure. You would also not have the freedom of movement necessary to be in a tub.

One of the main reasons a woman may choose to have a water birth is to help her avoid the use of pain medications, including an epidural. For many women, this is achievable since they find the warm water, and freedom of movement, helpful in managing their labour.
