    1040X for resident alien: Do I still need to submit a new 1040A with it?
    In 2010, I qualified as a resident alien (for tax purposes). In case it's relevant later, I'm on an F1 (student) visa.

    2010 - filed 1040EZ. Didn't consider the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC)
    2011 - filed 1040A. Tax Liability was reduced because of the LLC.

    I've been refunded for all refunds I applied. Now I'm planning to file 1040X for an additional refund due to the LLC. Something in the instructions however confuses me, and it's whether I need to submit a 1040A-2010 along with it.

    On page 4 (resident and nonresident alien section) in http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040x.pdf, it says specify the reason in 1040X part 3 but not to enter any information on 1040X page 1 aside from personal info (I would have updated Tax Liability), and complete a new form.

    Now I'm wondering if this (i.e. make a new 1040A and just write your personal info in 1040X) is only for those who filed the wrong form, say, 1040NR(EZ) instead of 1040A(EZ) or vice versa. I'm asking because this is the impression I got from the start of the section. They said to use 1040X
    * to amend 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ ---- doesn't apply to me
    * if I should have filed a resident form (1040, 1040A, 1040EZ) instead of a non-resident form (1040NR, 1040NR-EZ), or vice versa ---- doesn't apply to me.

    So do I really need to submit a 1040A for 2010 (for which I've already been refunded, save for this small credit), or will the 1040X be enough?

    Form 1040X is used for ALL amendments, not just for non-resident returns.

    If you filed Form 1040A and would file it again if you were re-filing, then do NOT attach the Form 1040A; the Form 1040X will be enough.
