Are u putting another light up in place of the hanging light?

To remove the hanging light it would be best to have 2 people.

    Shut off breaker to light.

With one person holding light the other person removes the mounting nut on the cover plate.

Lower cover plate and remove wires attached to light.

Remove screw that mounting nut was attached to and light will come down.

Hook up new light or cap wires and cover box with blank cover.

    Turn on breaker.

Once again, more detail is needed to give an answer.
Your question is far too vague to give any kind of accurate reply.

Crehands answer would be my guess without more info, does it have screws, or a Large locknut where the chain attaches?
