    Statute of limitations
I had the city contact me stating I owe money for a rental two years ago. It's the first time they have contacted me . I only have a receipt for half of what they are stating as the remainder was paid by cash and cancelled by phone( to the manager who no longer works there). I am pissed as I knowI don't owe anything, and it's two years later and they are just contacting me now. They agree that this is an issue with approx 100 people regarding this past employee and negligence. What is my legal right? Advice please

First, ANY question on law needs to include your general locale as laws vary by area.

Second, Why is the "city" contacting you? Was this public housing? Or did you receive a court summons?

If this does go to court, your only recourse is to get the others who are involved to fight this as a class action. If some of them can prove they paid, then it could reflect well on the other cases.

Next time always get a receipt and keep it for 7 years.

The Statute of Limitations would be 2 years from the date of last action. So it might be that they are contacting you now to start action within the SOL.

So, I would respond by telling them that you paid the rental in full and don't owe anything. If they go to court, then you will need to provide proof of payment of try to band other tenants similarly victimized into a group.
