Marks: 1 Two particles of masses m1 and m2 are attached to opposite ends of a massles
Two particles of masses m1 and m2 are attached to opposite ends of a massless string that passes through a massless, frictionless pulley. Given that m1 = 15 kg and m2 = 32 kg. Calculate the tension (N) in the string when the system is released from rest. Just enter a number rounded to one decimal place.

Here's how to get started. First calculate the acceleration of the system. You have two forces due to gravity pulling in opposite directions, so

    Then use

to find the sum of the forces acting on one of the masses. The sum of forces is equal to the weight of that mass minus the tension in the string. So now you have everything you need to calculate the tension. Post back with your answer and we'll check it for you.
