    Broken lease obligation
An apartment I lived in 7 years ago has just contacted me to say that I owe $2000, or so, for breaking a lease. I don't believe I would owe that much and wonder if I am even obligated to pay them. They are being VERY harassing.

In Ontario the tenant is protected and not often small claims court awards anything to a landlord. I don't know where you live, but check out your tenant/landlord laws, they should be readily available to you at your town hall, or on line, and I always suggest using a Google which is an amazing tool to find things you want to know. I don't see how they can come back at your for that amount over a seven year time. You may wish to look that up to. But did you break a lease?

You need to provide a little more information. Did you break the lease? If so, how many months were there remaining for the lease term? Did the landlord re-rent the apartment after you moved out? If so, when?

You would be responsible for the rent until the end of the term of the lease or when the landlord re-rented to a new tenant, whichever came first.

One more thing to note is whether the end of the term of the lease was within the statute of limitations in your area. If the time for the statute of limitations has already passed then they cannot sue you for the balance.
