I think a better question is WHY breed your calico cat. With so many homeless animals already in existence, is there a good reason for breeding this particular one and adding multiple new cats to the census?

But since you asked, breeding your cat can continue until she is around 12 with babies and mom being relatively safe.

I was asking because I was trying to be NICE and took in a young male cat who was running around loose in NORTH POLE ALASKA AT -40 F! And I was not aware he wasn't fixed and he got ahold of my older female

I don't think Schoolmarm was trying to be judgemental, but the general feel of the question seems to suggest intent to breed not an accident.
In any event there is the option to spay your older cat now before a litter or health problems arise. Pets are generally happier and healthy and can avoid some reproductive cancers and diseases that intact animals can get.

The problem is this is a public site and anyone can answer, also honestly they brought up some good points, these are not pure breed cats and there are 1000's of homeless ones and we don't need to breed more. Your friend should consider having their male "fixed" if they are a real responsible pet owner, not trying to run a PIMP service for cats.

Starrsnsmiles, you got the answer to the question. The age is 12 for safe breeding. As for not being able to tell that a male cat is "intact", that's something any cat owner needs to learn to recognize for a lot of reasons. By now you've probably figured out that it's far easier to tell that a male has equipment than that a female does. A quick glance will suffice. Too late, perhaps, but I'm sure it's a learning experience you won't forget.

Next time, you may want to word your question a bit better. When you ask how old is too old for you to breed your cat.. it sounds exactly like it sounds - like you want to breed your cat.

I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to breed your cat, if your going to keep the kittens, but I would not try if she's over 9 years old
