I have two sets of white/black wires and a separate ground. The fan was turned on by the pull cords, and the one light switch on the wall (a dimmer) worked the light. Now when I hook one set of black/white wires to the light fixture, the light works but won't work by the wall switch. When I hook up the other set, nothing happens. This is my first light fixture and I'm confused as can be!

Good morning.

More than likely you are looking at a switch loop.

You need to know which cable goes to the switch and which is the source of power.

Normally, you should find one of the white conductors with a black mark orblack tape on it. This will be the feed wire to the switch. You connect the Black wire from the source to the White wire for the switch.

Then you connect the black wire from the switch to the black wire on the light. The white wire from the soure will connect to the white wire on the light.
