The next step in our relationship
I want to take the next step in our relationship but I'm not in a hurry to get married but he said he doesn't want to and isn't thinking about it. I'm not pressuring him but we have been together for over 5 years isn't that long enough to be in a relationship and propose to me?

Do you mind sharing how old you both are? There is a big difference between being 20 and wanting to talk about marriage and being 25-30 (or older.)

I think you need to sit down together and talk about your expectations for the future. Make certain you are both wanting the same things. If he has absolutely no interest in ever getting married, it is best to find out now rather than ten or fifteen years down the road. Then you can make an informed decision about proposing to him and having a long engagement or walking away.

If you are sharing your lives in all ways but legally married, then you should be able to talk about marriage and the future. If he won't discuss it, then you have a better idea of where you stand with him and what his priorities are.

    Good luck.

Not to intenationally crass, but there is an old saying that might be fit here.

"Why buy the cow, when the milk is already free?"
Now for the setting, My former brother-in-law shot me this line when he was living with his divorced wife. My sister-in-law (wife's sister) was looking for a remarriage. He was not!

Consequently, a soon as the living arrangements came closs to the seven year mark (common law marriage) he pulled up stakes and fled back to Florida.
