How do you know when to replace your sewer line?
I have a cast iron sewer line. I had a plumber in with a camerea. He tells me that the pipe should be replaced. He said that it has a hole. I do have some clogs, but they will clear with a plumber snake. Not sure what to do. The house is approx. 40 years old. Please help.

With old cast iron, and the fact that the camera found a whole in the pipe, and you do get current blockages, now would be a good time to start saving up for a new line. Once the pipe has started to deteriorate, its only a matter of time before it collapses. The camera doesn't lie, it just tells you what shape your pipe is in. However, if you don't mind augering the sewer now and again, you can propably limp by for a while. If you live in an area where the winter temps get below freezing for months on end, I would get that pipe replaced in the summer. Gets pretty spendy to dig when the ground is frozen solid. And as luck would usually have it, it would be the dead of winter when the pipe failed completely. Good luck, and please let us know what you decide.
