WWAN stands for "Wireless Wide Area Network", while WLAN stands for "Wireless Local Area Network". You can probably guess what they both are referring to now that you know what the abbreviations stand for.

A WWAN is a large wide area network designed to connect many people to the internet or to each other while a WLAN is generally used in smaller areas like in a home, small office, etc.

The technology used to deliver a WWAN can differ from that used for a WLAN. WWAN typically uses Cellular Technology to transfer data where WLAN typically uses regular radio waves, via either analog or digital frequencies.

Often, you will find cell phone companies offering wide "hot spots" from which their customers can connect to the internet provided they have the correct hardware to connect.
