It is very tricky to lighten hair that has been coloured, especially time after time but you can try. Beware, the results can be unpredictable!

The black has to be bleached out to lighten it; maybe bleached twice. Only bleach twice if your hair is in OK condition or you could risk breakage and chemical damage. This will take it to a yukky light orangy/yellow and then you can put the color you want on top. Please don't try bleaching your hair yourself at home as I can guarantee it will go patchy and gross. You can have a friend help you if they are competent. Get the L'oreal home bleach kit (blue tone) and start at the back of the head. Separate small sections and cover thoroughly in bleach mixture. Don't bleach any of the regrowth (natural hair colour). Leave on for 30-40 minutes (or whatever directions say) and rinse off. You then have to determine the 'level' you are left with. Hairdressers use levels to determine your base color. 1 is black and 10 is extremely blonde (you can probably find charts online). From jet black you could probably bleach to a 6 or 7 (medium blonde)with two bleaches. So when you've determined your level you then choose the color you want to go. When you are at the store choosing a colour they are numbered as well as named. It is better to look at the number. Golden blonde for example will be 730 (7 for med blonde, 3 for gold with 0 reflect. The numbers can be confusing and that's why hairdressers have lots of training but just make sure the first number is no lighter than the hair you've bleached.
All this may sound confusing - and it is if you're not a hairdresser! My advice is if you can afford it, go to the salon and if you can't prepare for some random results!
    Good luck.
