    Cracking sound of my house
    My house is around 40 years old, I noticed there are loud cracking sound coming from the wall and ceiling, is it normal?

    My house is 70 years old, and at night in the cold weather, hear cracking from time to time. It is normal, houses never finish settling. I don't worry about it, I know my house is sound.

    Homes can creek and groan, it is up to you to make a judgment about the noises your hearing. While it may be normal settling, if your seeing any large cracks, or if the noise seems abnormal, perhaps it may be wise to have it checked out.

    That looks like improperly installed drywall.
