    Dog crying at night
After putting her to bed in her cage and everyone has gone up stairs to bed she starts crying and howling none stop for about an 1 hour. Then in the morning she starts again and doesn't stop it. She also does it when we go out. She have only just got her and she was fine for the first couple of days but then she has just started doing it she used to be greyhound racer. Is there anything we can do.

She's LONELY and new. She's been around other dogs and now he needs to be around people. So let her sleep in someone's bedroom for a few months, crate or not. When you are going out, spend some time with her for a few minutes, soothe her, give her some toys and a treat and maybe a windup clock for the ticking sound.

A new dog, especially a rescue (and most greyhounds had some abuse), needs extra attention, and that means not going out so much for a while, and taking her with you to parks.

She definitely needs time and attention. She probably has had a difficult life, as greyhounds who race often do. She needs love and affection. Is she housebroken? If so, why the crate? She might do better with a dog bed in your room when you go up at night or put the crate in your room for a while. If you're not sure if she is going to break training or chew things when you go out, you might need to crate her. Make sure she has a blanket in her crate and maybe leave on a TV or radio (some dogs like that). But I think time and attention is what she really needs right now.

Dogs alone don't do very well. Its very unnatural.

I never understood why owners opt to put their dogs in the basement or in a room that is very far away... That's no better than having a dog in a kennel outside

Move her crate into a room that people occupy at all times. I keep my kennel in my room and I never have whiney dogs. Its perfectly fine for her to sleep in a crate, but I would suggest that she sleep in her crate in a bedroom with a person. You'll have a happier dog, a happier household and you will avoid the ugly disease called Separation Anxiety. Once a dog develops separation anxiety, its hard to get rid of... and separation anxiety is not fun in any way, shape or form.

So, if you keep her in your room while you are home, she will be more comfortable when you are not there. Your room will be established as a safe place and as the den. That is more natural for dogs, dogs accept this routine very fast and there are little to no problems after everyone understands one another.

Did you get her from a greyhound rescue? Try contacting them for advice. I do know there are special things to do with rescued greyhound racers. They have many issues and they would be experienced.
