Is carbon reduced and oxidized during charge/discharge in a Li-ion secondary battery?
Some sources state that Li-ions are intercalated into the anodic graphite layers upon charge, thus forming LiC6. An electron would be forced to go from the cathode to the anode. Could C6(-) be described as an anionic carbonaceous material keeping negative charge delocalized over the aromatic, sp2-hybridized and plane system? This would describe a reduction of graphite while Li remains Li(I).
Others say Li is inserted as atomic Li(0) at the anode. This would mean the oxidation of Lithium upon charge at the cathode which makes no sense to me...
