Vent stack vents into attic only
My ex thought he was a contractor... he vented the plumbing into the attic only, not through the roof and out... what are the long term affects to our health, (it's very well ventilated)and how do you vent to outside... who do I call, a plumber or roofer... I want to use the attic space now... thanks!

Your health is probably OK but don't use the space yet. If cast iron, I'd call a plumber. If PVC, either one. Although either one can probably do either job.

Well ventilated or not this is a health hazard. While sewer gas raises with heat and will descend when it's cold. So in summer sewer gas may raise out of a well ventilated attic it will attempt to descend into your house in cold weather. The way I see it you have two options.
    1. Run each vent out the roof. **OR**
    2. Tie them all together in the attic and just run one pipe out the roof.
Be aware, there's a drawback to this method. If a roof vent ever has to be snaked the plumber has to haul all his equipment up in the attic and locate the vent to be snaked. He then has to cut that vent loose, snake it and connect it back up. All this will add
Considerable expense to the labor charge.
Sooo, What are your plans? Good luck, Tom

Agree with both above posts. I would suggest hiring a plumber, as they can legally do the roof termination, where as a roofer cannot leagally work on the plumbing vent. However, as stated above, this should be a fairly easy job for either a plumber or a roofer, or a handyman for that matter. If a person happened to be extremely anal, and wanted to spend the cash, you could have a plumber and a roofer work together. The roofer would cut the hole, and plumber would stick the vent up through the roof, and then the roofer would seal the roof with a roof jack etc. We do almost all of our own vent termintions from start to finish, however, there are a couple contractors we work with that don't want us touching their roof. They would rather cut the hole, and seal the hole. Hey, this works great for me, cause if there's a leak, it's their dime, not mine:)

Any plumber with any experience should be able to cut a hole in roof, extend pipe through roof(in this area 12" above roof) and put roof flashing on it to prevent roof leaks. Very easy job with any pipe material (cast iron, PVC, ABS)and if roof is asphalt not shake or tile makes job that much easier.
