Hi - I'm not a plumber, but if I describe the following can anyone offer suggestions:

I live in a small block of flats in a two floor flat. My bedroom is on the top floor, just below the loft containing the cold water storage tanks. I believe these tanks serve about 10 flats. The high pressure riser for at least one of these tanks comes through my flat. It has quite a few bends through the rooms, including the bedroom.

Whenever water is used elsewhere in the house there is a sound like someone rolling over gravel from the riser pipe that soon turns into a steady even rushing. Then after a bit the gravelly sound returns, louder, and with whistling noises thrown in. This noise will stop and start for quite a long time before finally stopping. Added to this is the fact that the storage tankls never completely stop filling -all night there is a dripping sound from thtanks, sometimes more, sometimes less. I suspect this must be down to a leak somewhere in the building that means the tank is constantly having to top up a tiny bit.

As for the very annoying gravelly whistling,I suspect that this noise is caused whenever the ball-cock valve is partly open or partly closed, and that because as the tank fills the float rises and the valve closes, the noise lasts for ages the second time as filling completely takes ages.

Does the above sound likely, and if so does anyone have any suggestions that might address any or all of the above? I thought that perhaps the design of the fill valves on the tanks might be a good place to start looking?

But seriously, let the ownership be aware of your situation and see if they can replace it with a solenoid type filler.
