Shift being changed at work (Ontario Canada)
I've been employed fulltime for the last 18 months at the same company working dayshift only (as I stated when they initially hired me that I was unable to work past 6pm). I was advised this past Thursday that I will be required to work 2pm-10pm from now on starting in January 3 2012. They told me that they understand that I have 2 children and I'm a single mom but I just have to figure something out. Now prior to this I had applied for a poistion in the company that would have been dayshift only, and instead they hired 6 other people for the position (4 of them being strictly nightshift workers). So now myself along with 3 others are required to take those spots. I feel that this is unfair to me and I'm wondering where I stand, what rights do I have? I've looked into alternate childcare arrangements, but there's nothing suitable. My son is 2.5 yrs old and goes to daycare fulltime days and my daughter is too immature to care for the both of them or to be left alone in the home for extended periods. Especially into the late hours of the night. Also my employer knows that I rely on public transportation to go to and from work. In the evening the bus switches to once and hour so even though I finish at 10pm, the bus wouldn't come until 10:35pm, then I would have another 30 minutes to wait until my bus comes, it's a 45 minute ride to my home, which means I'm not getting in until midnight. Let's forget about winding down when I get home and just pretend that I go right to sleep, I then have to get up and get myself and my son ready to take a bus to daycare at 6:30am. I'll arrive back home for 9am and then I'll have roughly 3 hrs give or take to do any chores, house upkeep, groceries etc... And then it's off to work I go. I do want to mention that I feel that they lied to me when they spoke to me about the shift change. They said they were getting rid of dayshift altogether and that everyone was getting moved around. What I found out the next day was that out of 12 people, they were only moving 4 of us. I also feel that perhaps I'm being targeted because 2 months ago I was going to resign because I had gotten another job offer, however it fell through so they allowed me to take my resignation back. I really don't know what to do. I just know that I can't make this work, it's not like I can afford to just up and move closer to work, or afford to pay for daycare for my son and then a separate one in the evening for both kids. Not to mention that I will never see either of my kids except every other weekend when I'm off work. And I'd be spending half of my pay on daycare which is ridiculous. I would love to know where I stand and what I can do. I was just going to tell them that I can't make it happen, and if there's no dayshift available elsewhere in the company then they may as well terminate me as a laid off, or shortage of work so I can at least collect EI and look for something else.
