    School lost my phone?
Hi, so I'm in high school and I play football at my school and now that football season is over, I get a free 6th period, and today during 6th period, I was walking through the quad of my school and I was about to call my mom to pick me up ( it was about 10 minutes before school ended) and the dean was behind me and he took my phone, I asked when I could get it back, and he said I had to have a parent pick it up or I could get it Thursday, so I asked if I could call my mom to pick me up, and I told her what had happened and he heard me and said something like " don't get her involved" or something, but I told her anyway, and he said I couldn't get my phone the same day but I could get it tomorrow if my parent came and if she didn't I had to wait till Thursday, so my question is, is the school allowed to look through my phone? I ask this because when he asked for my phone, I turned it off, than I remembered I had to call my mom so I caught up to him and asked if I could call and I noticed that he turned my phone on but couldn't do anything because I had a passlock on it. Anyway, is the school allowed to look through my phone? And what if I go tomorrow morning with my mom and they can't find or lost my phone? Can I sue the school or make the school pay somehow for my phone?

Does the school have a policy on cell phone use? Did you violate that policy?

It is actually an interesting question about whether he can look through your phone. It could go either way in a court. On the one hand, since he caught you violating school policy (assuming that you did), then he could check to see if you have used the phone at other times when you shouldn't be. On the other hand a court might rule it was a violation of privacy.

If they lose the phone, then they could be liable for reimbursing the costs.

Yes, they may look though it, you were using it in violation of a school policy ( I assume). So they have first the right to take it. But yes, they may look though your phone. They may if they feel you are using it a lot during school hours. To find evidence of you breaking the rules. Or if they suspect you were posting photos or something that broke other rules.

And why do you think they would lose your phone ? They will put it in the office with your name on it.

School policy on use of cell phones vary wildly, especially since Columbine. It would help us greatly if you could quote the school printed policy.
