Our 5 month old likes to sleep with the vacuum on at night.when we turn it off she tosses n turns and wakes up most of the time in seconds maybe a mintue of us turning it off. How can we ween her off this? Also she's been wakin up n wanting to play at night? She does not sleep all day or anything she just randomly does this. Any suggestions?

The do make the ocean sound machine that many people sleep to.

But you should not have started doing it, to start with, of course, and get her trained to sleep at night.

She did sleep at night. She was colick from reflux and when she cried really bad she choked and stuff and the vacuum was the only thing that usually could calm her down. That's why we did this of course. She's not a dog to train. She started her own schedule going to bed by 8:00 every night w/out us making her cry and scream using the "cry it out method". Its just been recent this started going on.

It is not unusual for a baby to start waking up at night during various stages of development. Is she recently learning to sit up more? Rolling over easily now? You will find sleeping, as well as eating, patterns will change on you now and then in the first year. You can try placing a few toys in her crib after she has fallen asleep and see if she will entertain herself a bit if she happens to wake up. Don't go into her room when you hear her awake unless she is really fussing for a time. Sometimes they just need a bit of time to settle themselves back down. You will have to judge by your own comfort level of how much time is enough.

Go in and sooth her, but try not to pick her up if possible. Keep it short and sweet then leave the room. She will fuss for awhile, and you will find that you have to repeat the process, but she will get it figured out.

You can try alternative sound machines if you like as Fr_Chuck suggested. Some people use soft music, some nature sounds, etc.. Turn it down after she is asleep, but not entirely off. Then after sometime, you can start turning it off after she has fallen asleep. It will be a gradual process.

It is no different than how some adults will get used to falling asleep with the TV on or a ceiling fan going.

Yes she is starting to sit up for longer periods by herself and she can roll over and has recently started sleeping on her side and rolling over on her belly by herslf and sleeping too usually we have noticed that when she does wake up she is laying on her belly and she will wake up crying and when we roll her back over she'll sometimes go right back to sleep and other times she'll only sleep with the vacuum on. Before we would let her play and let her be and she would go back to sleep no problem or if it was in the am and time for her to wake up we would do the same and then she would cry to let us know she was done playing and ready to eat. But now she's been more fussy as well. Could her teething have anything to do with this? She doesn't cry in pain from teething, just chews on EVERYTHING lol
