Whenever I cut my dogs nails he WILL NOT stay still. He is a 5 year old pug and he will not give up. I do not cut too close to the vien in the nail and I do not ever hurt him but he just gets mad when you try to cut his nails. I was wondering if maybe the peti paw would work (its on a commercial) (its an elecric file) (look it up on the internet if you have no clue what I'm talking about) please help me I don't want his nails to grow and be deformed

Many dogs do not like to have any part of their body restrained. Start by holding his paw and then releasing it, slowly increase how long you hold his paw thus showing him there is no danger. Quality treats after extended holding will help.This may take two people if he really fights it but you have to hold before you can move on to the cutting part. I use a $19 Dreml battery tool with a sand paper cone, cheaper than the pet stuff on TV and no danger of cutting to the quick.

See, you are forcing your dog to get his nails cut by holding him down. Either leave them or drug your dog and have him sleep.

I would venture a guess that MOST dogs don't like their nails trimmed. It's scary and unfamiliar and they don't like their paws held.

"Drugging" the dog for a nail trim is dangerous and foolish. I cannot believe a Vet would do this.

Bad advice.

Its not bad advice. It is a different approach and some vets will do it. Not saying that the person has to. Just saying that it is a different answer.

AMHD does NOT post "different answers." It posts good and valuable answers. No one said the poster had to do anything that's suggested.

Chopping the dogs paws off is also a different answer. That also counts as preposterous.

I'm saying that I do not know any Vet who will put a dog under for the sole purpose of trimming its nails. You apparently do. I've worked in animal rescue for years in NY.

Where is your experience, what State?

I've never seen a dog drugged, and if they did for some reason need to be sedated, I certainly wouldn't do this myself at home.

I bought one of the pedi-paws. I wouldn't waste your money. Ballengerb makes the best suggestion, by getting your dog used to you handling his paws. . Offer treats (kibble will do) as a positive reward every time you trim his nails, and use lots of "good boys" when you are just handling them, not cutting them. You don't have to do all 4 paws at once, do one, give him a break, and go back for another (just remember which one you did ;)).

Every time you offer your treat, a new toy, a scratch etc... ask him to give you his paw)
