Child Support arrears; help in South Carolina?
I am in need of some help, but I don't know if there is anything that can.

My ex has custody of my 2 boys, now age almost 17 and 15. I have had a payment program for my child support. I'm on disability for bipolar, ADHD, and post traumatic stress syndrome.

I receive $600 a month in payments for disability, and make my child support payment of $60 and $10 towards the back balance. I owe maybe $6k in arrears, and it hit me tonight, I have only paid $720 in the last 6 years towards my back amount.

I feel it will take me a lifetime to pay off what I owe, and I'm sitting here crying. I don't see my sons, but I do call them when I am able to. They only live 4 hours from me, and I haven't seen them since the doctors had me diagnosed. I'm unable to work, and, well, I feel like a huge loser.

How can I make this right, is there some sort of help I can find? I'm in South Carolina. I really need some help

You can try taking it back to court and ask a judge for an adjustment on the arrears. They may or may not adjust it pending recommendations from a panel review. Due to your limited income and considering the payment plan is over 10 years long they might adjust it to where it ends in 5 years.

Here is what it says on the subject:

If the non-custodial parent can provide a valid reason for not making the child support payments as ordered, the judge and the CSED staff will advise the non-custodial parent of the alternatives available in his/her case.

If your income was low when you got behind, and not properly set, yes you can see about adjustment. If you had good income and just did not properly pay when you were suppose to, sorry this is what you owe and yes it may never all be paid. But the fact you are now paying shows you are trying

I have not been able to keep a job for longer than a month. I did not work often while my ex and I were together for 7 years. Still I look at the amount I am paying and I cry. That doesn't cover much in life for them, and I was not thinking correct during that period in my life when the judge had set everything up.

I have been looking through the net to see what other help I can get, and there are a lot of programs for men, in fact my town has one, but none for women. My support does not come out by the government, but I do mail money orders to the court. I would love it if they could take it out, because sometimes it is so tight living on a very limited income.

Thank you for your responses - Tabi
