I believe no, but no one knows, and no one will ever know. Matter and energy have existed forever, with beginning universes and ending universes, our universe and other universes, forever. Our sun will explode, our galaxy with collide with Andromeda, all stars will explode at various times over a few billion years and our planets will burn up and all those clumps of matter will start all over again as a single dot, or start new stars and planets, or be part of a neighbor universe, or be something entirely different as part of a sequence we can't predict yet.

This question was asked in a Christianity forum, and I think it's pretty clear that for Christians the answer to this question is yes: "In the beginning God created the heaveans and the earth."

If this has been asked in a science forum the answer would be "no one knows." Joypulv says "matter and energy have existed forever" but that's not clear - it's pure speculation to talk about anything that may have occurred or existed more than 13.8 billion years ago, or to talk about other universes ("multiverses"). It is interesting that science and the Bible agree that there was a definite beginning to this universe.

Science has no answer as to what started or created matter in the beginning. There is no facts or science to explain how everything has come into existence. Matter just did not decide to appear one day, energy did not decide just to happen. Look at the beauty and balance of all the worlds.

    Yes God created it all.

When I started with 'I believe,' all that followed was part of my beliefs for pity's sake. If we have to keep science out of a religious forum, God help us. Neg this if you want.

Not sure if this is addressed at my previous response, but if it is... it was not me who gave you the "not helpful" mark (I only do that if facts are clearly incorrect). It was clear that you were posting your opinion, but it came across as pseudo-scientific so I wanted to clarify what science does (and does not) say about existence of anything prior to the Big Bang.

In general I try to keep science out of my posts on religion forums unless it first comes up from someone else. In the same way I also try and keep religion out of my posts in science forums.

Well as a Christian woman I say yes! God created the heavens and the earth. Certainly it is a matter of faith and I'm not ashamed of faith. God says we should look around and KNOW that HE exists.

Having said THAT, I guess I don't have enough FAITH to believe order came out of disorder. Or that my great, great, great grandpappy was a tadpole. Call me crazy?

Joy, I didn't give the reddie either. I just hate that we can't see who gives us greenie and reddies. DRIVES me nuts. I'm nosey. Ha. :)

But that's what Genesis says, that God created order out of chaos, "the earth was without form, and void."

    Wondergirl,

LOL... you love arguing with me. Ok, let me clarify. GOD created it. It didn't just happen. Order out of disorder. HE SPOKE it into existence... better?

He moved over the face of the waters. Where did the waters come from? He hovered over the earth. Where did it come from? He separated light from dark. Who had made them together so they could be separated?

The bible is clear that God created it, exactly how and how long is not known for sure, since before the creation of the sun and moon there were no days as we know it, for the beginning and end of the first day. That is a question man will not know till they sit before God on his throne.

But we know that it could not have happened without his plan and power.

No one knows. There are many origin stories - myths - about the creation of the universe. What we DO know is that THIS universe (some scientists think there may be other universes) came into being about 14 billion years ago. They determine this by calculating the present expansion of the universe and working backwards.

Religionists give answers, but science cannot confirm their answers (which tend to be unsupported and poetic/mythical).

I believe it was the Lord Jesus. I believe Genesis 1:1 and if that isn't enough check out John.

    John 1:3

All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Last time I checked my dictionary ALL means ALL.

There is some very alive super- conscious creative intelligence behind you being created with 6 billion neurons (brain nerves, as much as there are stars in the galaxy) with unlimeted potential.
(a dog or lizard have never being able to create and manifest violins and piano's and computers and use brilliance like Mozart Da-Vinci or Rembrandt or build and destroy many civilazations)
So welcome human being! Created in the image and likenesss of the 'Great Intelligence'.
The 'Infinite Intelligence" created a miniature intelligence called: humans with their brain capacity to co-create.
Unfortunately we did not yet activate our full mind capacity yet.(only 2%)
And still we create this much brilliance.
What would it be like if we start activting and use the other 98%?
And imagine who can create such an unbelievable perfect creation like a human being with such accurate precision?whole Universe with the same acuraty and super precision etc.
That is definetely not an accident!
There is certainly a super natural unlimeted supreme intelligence behind it!
Who have 'thought it out' a great deal.
    We call Him God.
Blessings and enjoy and learn how to activate and co-create and manifest your dreams through the ultimate book with all the unlimited formules called the bible , His word.
Then for certain you will know you manifested your desires through love.
    God is Love.
So humans and all creations are origanilly made and wired for love!

    That is

WHO has been handing out all the negatives lately?? We don't know under this new system. Whoever you are, please stop. They are for clearly wrong facts, not opinions, and the words helpful and not are misnomers.

    Very good questions!

    Here's my answer:

Something must be created out of nothing!
PROOF: regardless of how far we go back in the universe history, we have to come to the moment when there was nothing. So: whatever we had today, must be created out of nothing. This includes the god (for believers).

I challenge you or more questions regarding my proof.
    Thank you.

I would say that if we go back far enough we would arrive at a first cause rather than reaching a point where there is nothing. First cause arguments are of course subject too much debate.

Something created from nothing is an apriori argument. Basically meaning intuition tells us there must be a distinction between something and nothing. Again, this is highly debatable

Which every way you look at it there is no proof just debate.

Depends on what you mean by proof. Yes, there is scientific proof. By this I means that the Big Bang as a theory fits well with the current observations. This is basically what science attempts to do. Fit theory with observation.

    Why?
Because stating such a thing would be the same as they stated that 1+0=2!???????????????????????

There is only one Universe, one wholeness!! This is a simply fact, because of the axiom that one whole thing cannot be subdivided into more than one whole things. Simply math: 1/2 <1; 1/3, 1/4, 1/5...etc is ALWAYS less than 1!!

Everything else could be a subdivision of the Universe. That's where they got lost! Shame on the science because of this. I suggest that some serious scientific association make disclaimer or official statement that such ridiculous statement has nothing to do with the science. Those scientists who proclaimed more than 1 Universe should be kicked out of scinece association.

There are many different multiverse theories. I am not aware of any multiverse theory that wants to claim the universe is somehow subdivided.
