    Stone Patio
I am installing a stone block patio with 16" square blocks. Is it necessary to compact the stones after installation like you would with pavers? With the size of the blocks I am concerned that they will become unlevel if I compact them.

You do not compact them like you would bricks. Blocks this size are individually set with a rubber mallet, taping each as its laid until its level and even with blocks around it. What are you laying the blocks in?

I am setting in sand with 5" of 1" minus gravel compacted underneath. You answered what I had thought because they are not going to move.

I'd skip the sand because it never locks or sets. I'd use limestone screening on top of the 5" base

    Hi Bwilly,

Contrary to previous answers, I would definitely set your blocks on at least 1/2" of sand (set sand level using 1/2" black pipe). The sand is important for overall area surface leveling as well as providing for a forgiving setting substrate. Setting block/pavers directly onto gravel over the long term will result in an uneven top surface and eventual cracking of the blocks/pavers.

    Good luck with your project!
