    What are my rights in Virginia as a tenant on a house that has been sold at auction
    The house I'm renting in Virginia has been sold at auction. I saw it in the newspaper. The landlord never told us and I have been paying and now the new management company has said they will honor my lease but are asking me to sign a month to month lease. What are my rights? I have a lease and it has 6 more months on it.

    If they are going to honor your lease, why would they want you to sign another one? The only theory that makes sense is that they want it on their form; with all of the other provisions on their form also included.

    Get them to sign something to the effect that that they will honor your existing lease. If they insist that you sign your form, cross out the month-to-month part and insert 6-month language.

    Once that is expired, it becomes a month-to-month unless extended.

    Unless this was a bank foreclosure your lease is likely still in effect. A month to month lease could allow them to put you out with 30 days notice. Can you tell us more asbout the sale?

    They are required to honor the existing lease. No reason to sign a new one, unless its for a LONGER period or better terms. If you sign a new lease, then the current one is ended and so is their responsibility to honor it.

    I would say that they are trying to lie and trick you into a new lease, if you sign a new one, any verbal promise is no longer in effect. If your old lease is in effect, you should not do anything except perhaps sign another one, exact like the other.
