All, I have a corn stove that is heating the upstairs of my ranch home. I have closed all of the registers upstairs as I don't need heat up there. I would like to connect a thermostat in the basement to heat the basement when we are down there. But also would like the upstairs thermostat to work...

The heater is at least a 7 year old natural gas furnace by Lennox (model G50UH-36B-090-05) and the old thermostat a Honeywell programmable thermostat (model RTH230B). So first off let me describe this and see if maybe these might be symptoms of something else. The thermostat started acting up...

I would like to add a downstairs thermostat on my furnace. Will it hurt my electronic/programmable thermostat upstairs to simply wire another thermostat to the furnace? I understand the voltage would be sent back to it but it wouldn't go anywhere that it doesn't already when the upstairs...
