    240 Volt verses 277 volt lights
    Will a 277 volt fixture work on 240 volts.The fixture is 120/277 volt fixture

    It will work but I don't advise it. The 277 is a 3 phase setting and the 240 is a single phase and in mixing the 2 you produce a lot of heat that could cause a fire.I'd stick with the 120 and pay a little more on your power bill.

    The 277 volt fixture needs plus or minus a certain percentage of the 277 volts, usually 10%.

    240 Volts will fall out of this optimum operating voltage.

    A 277 volt fixture should be served by a 277 volt service, not 240 volt.

    If this is a HID lamp and ballast, many of the ballasts have taps for the various voltages available , 120, 208,240, and 277.

    I do not undertand the previous advice that use 120 volts and pay more on your power bill.

    Makes no sense, since a power bil is based on wattage and time. Using differnet voltages for the same device does not change the power used.

    Find the specifications of the fixture you have, learn the voltage it is rated for, and the allowed tolerance the input voltage can be, and I am sure you will learn that the 277 volt fixture will not operate properly on 240 volts.

    I'm assuming you have a fluorescent fixture with a 120/277v ballast in it. These ballast are used a lot in commercial projects to make it easier for the proper installation.If you do not have 277v power then you need to connect it to 120v power to avoid any problems in the future.
