    EtG question
I am 5/6 and 120 pounds, female. I drank 4 shots of vodka Monday at 11 am. I then stopped drinking until 4pm, when I then consumed 7 beers, ending at 9pm. I just found out I have my first EtG test Thursday at noon (12pm). What are my chances of passing?

Just so I know where to start, you say that you drank 1) 4 shots of vodka (bolus?) all at once? at 11 am... drank no more until 4 PM (5 hours later) 2) when you began drinking beer, consuming 7 beers in a 5 hour period. 3) Your last drink was at 9 PM on Monday. 4) Your test is Thursday at 12 noon? 5) From last drink you approximate 63 hours until time of test?

As you are probably aware this is a close call, could turn on several other factors, such as test cutoff, food during drinking, past drinking history.

Based on the limited information provided I would estimate your chances of passing at about 50/50 based on 100 ng/ml cutoff.

Thanks so much dr. Bill, Yes the vodka was consumed in about a 30 min. period. No, I did not consume any food during drinking. I drink often and have a high tolerance. I have consumed about a gallon of water and a pot of coffee as well as 12 ounces of red meat today. Any additional comments, what other information could e helpful?

Also I drank 6 beers Sunday night over a 6 hour period. If I consume a couple gallons of water tomorrow (wed) would that help me pass on thur?

Overall I doubt that clearing this test is the critical issue in your case. In the event you pass this test it sounds as though your drinking pattern will return you to a similar crisis situation. You are pushing the limits.

Water isn't a magic elixir but it is a pronounced and acknowledged weakness in EtG testing.

Wishing you well, please let us know of the results.

Thanks again for your input dr. bill. I understand that I was pushing my limits if I knew the test was coming. I fully intend to withstain from alcohol once I started my court appointed screenings, which weren't supposed to start until next thur! Best believe this past Monday will be my last drinks for 6 months, the stress is not worth it! One last question, would the drinks Sunday night accumulate (etg) with the drinks Monday night, and since I drank two days in a row would that decrease your opinion of a 50/50 chance of passing after 62 hours? I may be able to postpone the test but would rather get the show on the road...
Thanks so much for what you do! I will let you know the results..

The EtG created from your drinking on Sunday would be gone. The alcohol consumed on Monday, especially the evening drinking, would be your concern. I agree with Dr Bill about the factors that may determine if your are positive-especially the cutoff. I would add that your hydration level and time of your last void prior to testing will affect your results as well.

As you have stated, the short-lived buzz from alcohol isn't worth the stress of worrying about failing a test. Your life would get worse QUICKLY if you fail, but might just get exponentially better after 6 months without drinking. Good luck with your results.

EtG/EtS ratio question... [ 2 Answers ]

Hi DrBill (and anyyone else kind enough to provide answer), My question is about the EtG/EtS ratio relating to common testing cut-off levels. EtS cut-offs are commonly set at 1/4 of the EtG cut-off, but the only study I found regarding this ratio (Hoiseth, Bernard, et al. 2007) seems to indicate...
