Maple tree roots are they a problem?
    Dear Advisor,

How far can the roots of a Maple tree grow and are they a hazard to walk over or damage property/ies?.
How can I contain the root growth if required too?.

    Many Thanks... Lisa

I have several very old maple trees on my property and have not seen a root problem anywhere. If you mean can they re-surface? I don't believe they do or I would have a problem in my garden.

Some species of Maple, Norway in particular, are notorious for having surface roots. It is almost inpossible to grow grass under them and most people mulch. Roots typically grow to the edge of the limb spread, also called the drip line. Cutting the roots won't do a lot, they will regrow. That is why it is important to pick a species that fits your requirements. I've cut down a lot of big spruce trees about 4 ft. from a house because the "little Christmes tree looked so cute".
