Was changing a burned out light in my fan with the switch off. The fan made a popping noise and the lights have not worked since. The fan works fine. It is a 2 toggle switch on the wall for the fan, one for the fan the other for the lights. Any suggestions? Thanks

Start by confirming there is power going to the switch for the light. Back to you

The circuit board burned, probably the coil. I have 2 casablanca fans with the same problem and I called techinical support and the board is not available, they suggested upgrading to another type of controller and circuit board to the tune of $205.

Coil, what coil, fans have capacitors but no coils. The posters says the power was off so I am sus[pecting a failure in the switch that still allowed power to reach the fan. Unless the poster returns we will never know.

The inductor I was referring to is on the circuit board that controls the light on a Casablanca Inteli-touch series fan. Why be so critical right off the bat?

Don, sorry if you think I am too critical, if I had been I would have used the rating system to give you a low mark, which I did not. However, the poster said the power was off and you stated the circuit board burned. Seems like a leap, since there was no power reaching the board. Just yesterday I gave you a positive mark regarding moving an extra bright bulb to another socket, so obviously I am not being critical right off the bat.

From my experience with Casablanca fans that popping noise he heard was from the short on the circuit board which controls the light.I did not assume the noise occurred with the power still off. If the person has an Inteli-Touch series fan and heard the noise when he turned the power back on there is a good chance the board is fried. Besides, I am just offering my opinion not looking for a grade and if you are not interested in my 35 years of experience I will not post again..

Its not an intel series. The switch was off. I may have failed to mention the bulb did seem caught in the socket and was hard to get out. We have not taken the fan apart yet. Could I have pulled the wires enough that they touched. If so then I guess we will dismantle the light and see.

Don. On the contrary, you should stick around. Our regular fan man has not been around for months and I am just filling in. I do mostly installs and avoid repairs in real life. Ceilingfanrepair is/was our fan guy so maybe you can handle this section of AMHD. Now that the poster has returned with more info may we can move forward.

Sue, do not take the fan apart but lets talk further about that bulb, remove it and try it in another location. Install another new know good bulb and be careful to not crossthraed it when you screw it in.

I have tried new bulbs without success. The fixture has 4 bulbs in it. The other 3 still work in other lamps. My daughter now mentions that she was standing by the light switch when this happened and heard a loud pop from the switch too.

Hard for us to tell which pop she heard, sounds do funny things inside a room. There would likely be only one pop, either the switch or the fan but not both. I am/was leaning toward checking the switch before you go any further. Do you have any interest in doing this and do you have a test light or meter?

I don't have a light meter or way to check the with. I appreciate all the thoughtful comments. Maybe I should have an electrician come test it.

Hi Ball. I came upon this thread looking for a solution to the same problem Sue had. I have a Casablanca ceiling fan, and have already tried all the steps of testing the bulbs and the switching, coming to the conclusion that the unit itself or the light switch is the problem. So, if you have a moment, I'd like to hear what you would do next to remedy this broken fan light issue. I can get my hands on a test light or meter, if necessary. Thank you in advance.
