Own a house in one state and living with family in another?
My wife and I are planning to move to NJ and keep our house in FL to let my children use while going to college during the last three months of the year. We will be living rent free with family in NJ. My wife will be working in NJ and I will be changing my address with my employer to NJ and will be working remotely. Will NJ be considered my primary residence now since our W-2s will reflect a NJ address? Will I still be able to claim the entire property tax and mortgage interest for my in FL? I realize we will have to pay NJ state tax. I just want to know how my home in FL is considered durinf tax time (Primary or secondary?).

Probably yes, but it really depends on your long term intent. If you plan to stay in NJ for at least a year then it is your principal residence. If you plan on staying less than a year you could claim FL as your ongoing residence, but you would still pay NJ taxes on your NJ-based wages. An advantage to this would be if you have other sources of income (dividends, interest, capital gains, etc) you could avoid paying NJ income tax on that other income. If you go this route make sure your employer uses your FL address as your home address.

Yes. You are allowed to deduct mortgage interest and real estate taxes on your second home (assuming NJ is your principal abode then the FL house becomes your vacation home).

    Secondary.
