I'm now planning the remodeling of my master bathroom. Thanks to Massplumber2008 my guest bathroom is complete, and looks and works great. In my master bathroom I'm building a walk-in shower. In the shower I want a toe tester (a tub spout will work fine), a normal shower head, and a rain shower. I would like all of these fixtures to work independently. It might be nice to have the normal shower head and rain shower work together, but it is not a requirement. I know I need a mixing valve. Would a 4 port diverter do the trick? I've attempted to read up on the 4 port diverter and some write-ups say they turn on one fixture, or a second fixtures, or all fixtures. That would not work in my case. Any suggestions on what diverter I need would be greatly appreciated.

If you make it so the tub spout has a diverter on it then an in wall 3-port diverter should allow you to run shower only, rainshower only, or both shower head and rainshower head at the same time.

I can't say much on a 4-port diverter... never installed one, but if you are still concerned then I would recommend stopping by a local plumbing supply store with a showroom and talk to the salespeople about this, OK?

Finally, if you want a really wonderful shower experience be sure to consider installing a thermostatic mixing valve with 3/4" inlets/outlets and plan on running new 3/4" pipes to the bathroom... more volume makes for the best shower experience!!

Thanks for the response. We last posted in November 2009. Thanks to you, the guest bath is great. Since we lasted posted I've totally remodeled the kitchen. I now has new cabinets, an island, and granite counter tops. Kathleen, my wife, helped me hang the cabinet. There is not a plumbed wall in this house and forget about 90 degree corner. Our marriage of almost 40 years just barely survived.

Tell me about diverters. When you see a diverter valve with the spec. of 3/6 what does that mean. The valves I've look at they have 4 ports. Lets call them A, B, C, and D. One of the four has to be an input. Lets make that port A. Therefore I'm guessing the 3/6 mean; B only, C only, D only, B and C, C and D, and D and B. The half way position between port combine the two. If I get a mixer which has 4 ports and block the port that normally goes to tub and put the 3 port diverter on the port that goes to the shower, I should be able to divert that port to 3 different fixture. Is that the correct way to install the diverter?

Thanks for the advice of 3/4" ports. That ups the cost a bunch, but my guess is, it is worth it.
