    Taxexempt on J1 visa
    Hi,I am doing residency in family medicine,I am a citizen of pakistan,and I am on j1 visa.
    I have been in USA since OCt 2004.I want to know for how long I will be exempt from social security/medicare/federal income tax.thanx

    The tax exmeption for J-1 visa normally last only two years.

    However, if you stay BEYOND two years, then the tax exemption is normally revoked retroactively and you must file and pay taxes for the two years you were exempt.

    Yes, you are exempt from ALL taxes if you qualify.

    However, a residency is not normally considered to be teaching or research. It is considered to be more like a business apprenticeship, which means your salary would be subject to income taxes, but NOT Social Security and Medicare taxes.
