Procedure to file federal taxes jointly and TN / AL separately
Procedure to file federal taxes jointly and TN / AL separately :

    Hello,

I am a resident of Alabama while my spouse lives/works in Tenessesse. TN does not have any state income tax and I guess we do not need to file one. What would be the procedure to file federal jointly while paying AL state taxes only on the income that I had in Alabama?

    Thanks!

See: Filing Status If your spouse does not live in AL nor have any income from AL sources you may file as Married filing Separately in AL even though you file as Married Filing Jointly on your federal return. So you file your own return with AL and report your full income, and your wife does not need to file a return with AL.
