Hi Phoenix, nice to "see" you again. Sorry I forgot to check back with more names for the day care centre. I had other distractions.

If you have a floor plan, you don't need a contractor who builds child care centres. You are limiting yourself. No contractor builds these as a specialty. They wouldn't be able to stay in business.

The more important thing to consider is the architect/designer in this scenario. You need someone who has prior experience designing these facilities. There are safety factors and legal requirements that must be considered.

So, if your floor plan was designed by someone in the know, then they should have a list of general contractors that they have used and can recommend. If you don't trust their recommendations, then you need to look through your local business directories and pick out at least 6 general contractors. Send each an RFP (letter of request for proposal) along with a copy of the plans. Include your time and budget requirements.

The best way to weed out contractors who overcharge/undercharge is to get as many proposals as possibe. Then interview each and listen to their presentations carefully. Ask each one to give you a list of their most current projects along with contact names and numbers. This way you can walk the jobs, check to see if the current clients are happy with them, and assures the fact that you are not just receiving a list of their own picks of recommendations (friends usually). Also ask for a list of architects/designers they have worked with. Call those people as well. They will be a lot more truthful with you as to whether the contractor is capable of completing the work on time and within budget, as the contractor says he is.

    I hope this helps.
