Im thinking of going away.. Military
I am currently enrolled in college. I really dislike school. I can't pay attention in class. I just broke up with the girl of my dreams and I am really sad. The whole reason why I decided to go to college was to be closer to her. Now that its over I don't know why I'm at school. I don't like the people here except a couple. Every time a see a girl I compare them to her and no one comes even close. Not just looks but personality too. I can't stop thinking of her. And I know there is no possible way she will take me back. My dream was to become a Navy Seal but I decided I would rather be with her then pursue that dream. I honestly don't know why I am at school. I don't see a point too it. So I am considering dropping out and joining the Marines. My parents and I are from a I guess you can say a wealthy community. Where everyone is expected to go to college. Joining the marines or army or anything is not something that is okay with my family. I don't know how this will affect my parents if I bring this up and I don't know how too. I am deciding to just move on with my life. And now I want to do what I want to do. I just don't know how to. Any thoughts? Im lost..

    Hello marine:

You're an adult. Tell them just like you told us.

A Navy Seal is one of the hardest to qualify for. There is a lot of training and then there is a lot of really hard testing to qualify as a SEAL. And they do a lot of maneuvers on the water and on land as well so it is mandatory that you are a good swimmer. If you are ready for the challenge of your life physically, then go for it. A friend of my son was a SEAL and he received one of the best training programs the US military could offer. You will definitely forget your girlfriend as you will be too busy learning and training. Being a SEAL would probably build up yourself confidence as well. It will be something you could be proud of once you do accomplish this dream of yours. Just passing their water rescue course is quite a feat in itself.

Please understand that there are many many people who try to be seals and there are few openings. So consider that you may be in the navy and never make it to be a seal. So keep your options open.

Next this is not something you can just walk away from, like college. So don't do this just because some girl has broken your heart, because in a few weeks or a month or so, you can and will find a new lady friend.

So what about next semester transfer to another school

What about getting into a Navy ROTC program

I see a lot of anger and depression in your post. A lot of whining and complaining. Here's some advice that saves lives...

"An angry mind is a narrow mind."

I believe that is what's happening here. You suddenly feel there's no purpose to be where you're at so you fall back on a faded dream thinking it will take you away and you'll be happy.

I will tell you what I tell all my friends who talk to me about joining the beloved Marine Corps. You better be doing it for the right reason. It's not a joke. Lives are lost because kids wanted an easy paycheck and the uniform, with intentions in completely other places.

I am harsh about this subject for two reasons.

    1. I hate pity parties.
    2. I'm a United States Marine.

If it's really what you want. GO FOR IT!! You're a grown man and at some point you make decisions that are no longer what's best for your parents but best for you and your future.

My advice is to take some time. From school and military. Clear your head and you will realize where you belong.

    Good luck and semper fidelis...

The SEALS have tons of openings for new members. They always NEED people. The only requirements are to pass their rigorous training AND their testing. It's just like being an Army Ranger or Special Forces member if you can pass the training and testing and survive the CUT, they give you additional training and hook up you up with an existing unit. So long as you are able to go through BUDS you can make it.
