    Problems drawing blood
I am fed up with nurses can't get blood out of me my vains are so deep I can't believe it I have tryd the trik of drinking loads of water before going and putting a heat pack on my arms, as well doing arm exercises and still no luck. The only way the nurse had blood from me was by putting the needle in my vain that is higher in the arm and pulling it out but that vain has gone now and they need to make more blood test on me. Thank you kirsty

I have a similar problem. It's not the nurses' fault, so be sure you tell the nurse or technician right away about this. I've had some who could find a vein right away and others, including the head nurse, who were clueless. Unfortunately, there's no easy way to do this. Be sure to ask for a skilled person to take your blood.

Yes, please don't blame us nurses. It's not our fault. Some people are what we call "very hard sticks." There are many many reasons for this, dehydration being only one.

Many hospitals, including mine, have what is called a "vein finder." AccuVein | Vein Finder, Venipuncture, Vein Illumination | AccuVein AV300 Ask if your facility has one.

By all means, let the nurse or phlebotemist know that you are a hard stick.

Drinking water just prior to seeing the nurse won't help. You have to stay hydrated all the time, not just that day.

With that said, there are many other reasons for being a hard stick as well.

However, you did say this, and that is why I took offense.
