Suggestions for fantasy, Sci fi or apocalypse books with young boy becoming great...
I'm needing suggestions on books similar to "The Bakers Boy" by J.V. Jones, "Enders Game" by Orson Scott Card, "Mageborn: The Blacksmith's Son" by Michael G. Manning, "The Shattergrave Knights" by David M. Haendler, Etc...

I really like stories that are action/adventure and revolve around a young boy who comes from nothing (an outcast, orphaned, etc... ) and grows up to be great in some way. Maybe he was orphaned and later finds out he is royalty and has to fight to stay alive because the ones in power don't want it known. It could also be about survival after the apocalypse and he eventually grows up to reunite civilization. Really, anything involving someone young that goes through a series of trials, is almost beaten and overcomes them in the end.

The Baron in the Trees by Italo Calvino
A young eighteenth-century Italian baron defies the expectations of his family by choosing to live the rest of his life in the trees. Adventure, love, and even a meeting with Napoleon all fill out the rich existence of a man who goes to extremes to craft a life of his own.

Have you read The Belgariad series by David Eddings? It begins with Pawn of Prophecy.

A true classic is Harlan Ellison's A Boy and His Dog.

Alan Dean Foster's Pip and Flinx series is very good. The first book is The Tar-Aiym Krang though there is a prequel called For Love of Mother-Not.

More juvenile but well worth the read is the Diadem series by John Peel and the Deltora series by Emily Rodda. Both series are about young adults overcoming obstacles.

There are so many books that can be recommended. Along with the library, a used bookstore can be great place to look for books. Going through the shelves you can sometimes come across books you would never have thought about picking up if the title or cover hadn't caught your eye.

    "The Forever King" by
Molly Cochran and Warren Murphy. There are 2 sequels to this.

"Eyes of the Dragon" By Stephen King. Not scary. This is more of a fantasy/fairy tale involving a young prince evil wizard etc.

"The Once and Future King" by T. H. White. A lighthearted version at the Sword in the Stone/Arthurian Legend. 1 sequel

I would say "The Deed of Paksinarrion" by Elizabeth Moon but it is about a girl as most of her books are. Otherwise the character starts with very little goes through tons of trials and adventure (armies, battles, orcs etc) to come out on top.

Check these out on amazon.com they sometimes have a "look inside" feature that lets you read the covers and a few pages.
