    Icons will not open
I cannot get my icons to open when I double click on them or run as administrator. Little circle goes round thinking and then it disappears but nothing opens. Includes WoW, itunes, Windows media, Curse Client, Mumble etc.
Does the same thing when trying to open restore point and Task Manager using CTRL ALT DEL.
I have ran Registry Booster thinking it was a regidtry issue. It found problems that were fixed but no result.
Is it some sort of Viral Coruption. I can't solve it with the little I Know.

Try right clicking on your desktop, click view, then be sure "Show icons" is checked.

Just curious to ask, if you run them without administrative privileges. How well do they behave?

    Try this:
Run an elevated instance of command prompt (this can be achieved by typing CMD into your Start search bar and hitting CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER).

    In the Command prompt, type:

    Sfc /scannow

Let it complete the operation and reboot your computer. Try again then.

Another thing to try if it still doesn't work is to create a new user account and try running your applications on it.

    To do so:

Start -> Control Panel -> Users -> Create a New user account
Name it 'test' or something of that vein.

Log off your current profile and log into the 'test' account we made. After logging in, try executing your applications (you might not have the icon though).

This sounds like the work of those virus types that rename files with an .exe extension to some unusable file extension.

Do you know how to do a System Restore?

NeedKarma, besides that and the crap they do, some uncheck the "Show Desktop Icons" box.
Many won't even let you do a System Restore. Safe Mode and shutting down all but what's necessary usually works.

Agreed. Some of those viruses are just plain nasty. Sometimes I've had to boot into a rescue disk to fix the issue; I've had to do a Windows repair-reinstallation only a couple of times - all this with the PC in hand, can't walk someone through it in forum postings.

I just went through this fixing someone else's computer. It was the 2010 IEdefender virus. AKA w32.virus. Pretty nasty. Scale of 1 - 100 rated at 95 for threat level.

The newer ones come with trojans too. What a joy ;)
