I have stolen money from my employer by means of performing a cash refund transaction that never actually occurred. I went into work, and for some reason I thought they picked up on it. Before they could approach me, I asked to leave as my grandma was not well, and I really could not stay at work. I also told them I might have to leave the country. When I got home, I wrote a letter of resignation and emailed it to them. Would they still pursue me with there findings, and would this be on my reference? Thank you in advance.

Yes of course they can still come after you. Why would you think they would not. They can call the police, show them the evidence, have you arrested and so on. Just quiting means nothing. They can still say you stole from them if they have proff.

Depending on how much you took, yes of course they can come after you

It was a stupid thing to do I know. It was £40. I wanted to go and confess, but I am not sure if I should bother, as it has been 2 weeks now.

No, no way do you go confess, that is even worst, even if questioned, do not confess. Speak to an attorney if you are questioned before answering

On a positive side, it appears you have realized you messed up, I hope this is a learning experience not to repeat this.

If it has been two weeks, and the police have not contacted you I doubt if they will.

They also may have never caught it, and you may have only had fear they knew, most likely they never knew, and you were so worried, you assumed they did.
