This program or whatever it is "msnmegrs" keep opening up and freezing my PC. On start up I have to "ctrl-alt-del" and when I find "msnmegrs" running then I close it and the PC is fine, until such time as this "thing" opens up again, which I then close once more and all is well. Can anyone tell me what I should do, I have virus scanned with AVG and Trend Micro and my PC has no virus. I have done ad-aware scan - no change. All help will be appreciated.

Do you mean msnmsgr?
This is the MSN messenger process, best thing to do is once you have stopped the process is to uninstall it and try again.

If you are using Messenger, then a reinstall is called for.

Hi,
If you don't not want to use Messenger, then go to:
Start/Run, and type in MSCONFIG. and click on Go.
Then, click on the StartUp tab at the top of that window.
Scroll down the left hand side, looking at all the programs that are starting up when your computer is turned on!
You can left click on any of them, but you will be looking for anything referring to MSN or Messenger.
The left click removes the checkmark.
Then, click Apply, OK, and restart the computer.
This will stop it from starting when you re-boot.

Hi,
Thanks for the advice but I have been using MSN messenger for years and this has never happened and the "thing" is definitely called "msnmegrs" . I did what was suggested and stopped it from opening on start up but now I am concerned where it might be hiding lol.
My mouse seems to float a bit sometimes and pages take ages to load which was not happening before this "thing" appeared.
Any more advice would be appreciated.

A quick search on the internet and it looks like a Trojan - http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/anal...ojsdbotyu.html . In other words - get rid of it and fast.

If you have a virus scanner, make sure your virus definitions are up to date and scan your PC. If you don't have a virus scanner - get one! Some free ones are AVG Antivirus and Avast! Antivirus.

After that, do a spyware scan as well. The two I use are Ad-Aware and Spybot: Search & Destroy

Finally, installing a firewall might be a good idea as well - just to make sure your PC is extra safe. A free firewall is ZoneAlarm (bottom of the list).


Trojan's are nasty things and are a real danger on your PC. It could do anything from use your PC to perform illegal actions (attacks on servers etc.) to tracking your key presses (in other words they could get your passwords, bank details etc.). Let us know if you have a virus scanner, firewall and/or spyware protection already installed.

Thanks for the info.
I have virus scanners and ran both AVG (free version fully updated) and Trend Pc-cillin (also fully updated) and no virus was detected. (I ran these in safe mode with system restore disabled as I was told this is the best way)
I also have ad-aware and spybot - both fully updated and still nothing detected that remotely resembled this "thing"
I have a firewall (it came with trend pc-cillin) and this is also on.
Really, I don't know but I must say since I stopped it on start-up I have not seen it again. I do have another funny thing that keeps appears in the task manager - WINMGMT - what this is I also have no idea but the mouse runs around when this appears, so I close it and things are fine.
