References what can an employer say?
I was just denied a job because of 2 bad references. The prospective employer said he couldn't reveal those references. What can I do to avoid this in the future?

    Hello d:

If they LIED, then you can sue them... I can't imagine you don't know who it was. How many references do you put down on an application?? I only put down the ones I KNOW he can call.

But, if it's the truth, there's nothing you can do... In answer to your original question, an employer can say ANYTHING as long as it's the truth.

As far as I know it depends on the state. Here in Arizona (for whatever reason I'm not sure why) the only thing a reference can be is 'would you rehire this person' 'yes or no'

Actually no, in Arizona they can give a complete reference as to work habits, attendance and more

    Arizona
If reference is presented in good faith, the employer is not liable for the disclosure regarding job references provided information regarding job performance, professional conducts, evaluation or reason for termination is provided in good faith. Good faith is presumed if the employer employs less than 100 employees, or, employs at least 100 employees and has a regular practice of providing such information. (Ariz Rev. Stat. §12-1361)

Many companies have policies that will only give out that info, some will not even give that out. As a boss I would seldom give any reference unless they were very very outstanding.

Only a few times did I give a very very poor reference,
