Can I cancel Supplemental Security Income?
My son will be moving in with his dad and so I was told that he has to go to the office and give them all his information but he doesn't want to bother. Why won't they let me do it? I know that his dad makes much more than the limit because I lived with him while at his current job.

He has to do it because it is his responsiblility to do it. Just one more thing he will have to do deal with through life is doing things officials want him to do and no questions asked.

Mom, just make sure it he does it. I know you still want to save him the bother because you are his mom, but gee, cut the apron strings and make him go do his duty.

If he is over 18, they would wonder why his mom is doing it for him.

No, the father has to do it I guess, not my son, he is too young. I just don't understand why I can't just cancel it! It's saving the govt. money. His dad just doesn't like to deal with this stuff. And I know that he earns too much to get anything for my son.

I am confused. How old is your son, and do you mean you told your sons father to do it, or your son? If your son is under 18, then it is the guardians responsibility, and if he is going to live with his father, its his fathers job to do this. And if dad makes more than the limit, than that is all there is to it.

Is this move permanent? Or temporary? If it is temporary it is possible that nothing needs to change if it is just an extended visit.

The move is permanent and my son is only 14. His dad gets pissy when he has to take a day off and do things like this. He won't qualify for SSI any longer as his dad makes way too much money. It would just be easier if I could do it myself. I don't want to get grief from his dad. I would like to just cancel it. It would be saving the Govt. some money! They won't even let me change my son's address to his dads and send him a letter! His dad has to go there an tell them himself. That doesn't make sense!

In this case I would simply inform the SSO (in writing and save a copy) that the child no longer lives with you, and then leave it up to his father. If he gets caught NOT doing what he needs to do, HE will be the one in trouble.
