Double check that there isn't a setting in the TV to disable the built-in speakers. There is usually an option that will turn on/off an internal mute or something along those lines.
If that is fine, then it could be any number of parts on the TV and without seeing it I cannot help you diagnose it. You'll be looking at $150-200 USD just for an in-home diagnosis. From there you might be looking at additional for parts and a return trip.
My suggestion is to invest the money you would spend repairing it into a new TV. Even if you fix this issue, with a TV this old, you have no idea what will go next.
