The farmer who hays the fields on the property on which I reside is going to spread Turkey feces on the fields to fertilize them for more hay production. I am concerned about diseases, especially histoplasmosis, if he does this. The closest to my house would be about 100 yards, however our swimming pool is within 10 yards. Also I have house dogs who roam theses fields at will. Should I be concerned or not?

It is common farm practice to use animal feces to fertilize farms. Of course while their may not be any leash laws, dogs do not need to be roaming open farm fields for many reasons.

I'd be concerned with Psittacosis as well as e-coli and other problems.

Yes, call the county extension service or health department.

If the dogs wander the fertilized fields at will, the feces will adhere to their feet and legs, and if they jump into your pool or come into your house, they will leave possible disease in their wake.

Histoplasmosis is an airborne fungus that affects the lungs. Is it possible to get something in the water? Yes but not histoplasmosis. E coli is one.

I guess I am in defense of the farmer here, most likely his farm was there long before other houses were build, and using animal waste is common and normal procedure. Done in farms all though out US and Canada, every year.

And one that would or should have been noted before moving in next to a farm.

While you may have concerns, the farm is fully within its rights to use a natural material. So even if you have concern, I see nothing you can do about it unless you wish to build some wall or something up around your pool.

Besides the smell when they do it, of course horse and cow manure are the most common to use.
