    Pregnancy and other conditions
I have a question about my sister who is pregnant in Ireland. She is 38 weeks pregnant, she is suffering from really bad hemorrhoids, which they were even going to operate on and decided not to and pushed some back inside. She has diabetes from being pregnant and has to take insulin, her platelet count keeps dropping, her count is now at 105 and she has had problems with liver enzymes they are waiting on results of a hepatitis C test to come back from the lab. Her ob said that if her platelets drop any more that she will not be able to have an epidural. I do not know the thinking of why they have not done a c-section already, she is scheduled to be induced 3 days before her actual due date, last week she was told that the baby already weighs 8.7lbs. She is a small girl; before she was pregnant she weighed 135lbs and is 5.4. Can you tell me why they would not deliver her already?

Low platelet count could result in excessive bleeding, although low count is not uncommon, but your sisters condition is complicated by diabetes, and from what you say, because they are testing for Hep C, a compromised liver. There is a lot going on with her pregnancy and I can see why her ob is being very very cautious. We can't tell you why they will not delivery the baby, but at the same time, they have two lives at stake here and caution is foremost in her ob's mind.

Chew how old is you sister by the way?

By the way, the hemorroid surgery was probably put off because she is at risk as a bleeder because of the low platelet count. I guess you might say the hemorroids are the least of this problem.

I am sorry I can't give you a reason. Understand it is a extremely difficult to answer a question such as yours (and we can't diagnose anything on AMHD).

I would suggest you sit down with her doctors and get the whole story so you are satisfied that you know all the answers, but there are many variables in your sister's case as I mentioned before.

I really don't have much more to add than Tickle already has.

It seems that your sister is having a very high risk pregnancy with quite a few complications.

There is little reason to risk surgery on the hemorrhoids at this point as they may be reversed after the delivery of the baby.

It appears that your sister may be beginning to suffer from what is called HELLP Syndrome. HELLP stands for Hemolosys, Elevated Liver enzymes and Low Platelets. It can be life threatening for some women.

A C-Section would be out of the question as it could cause life threatening bleeding.
